The first is the debut recording from the trio with Heiko and Matthias, Worn Out West. I contacted Heiko and Matthias (in Dresden) a few years after the passing of Chris Whitley, whom they did some great work with. (my favorite was Hotel Vast Horizen) They were open to my idea of working together and I arranged a short tour of Germany for us last year. We hit it off and they came over to the USA for the month of October last year. We received financing from a fan in Hamburg to record the 11 song collection, Great American Opera. After a month of shows, we recorded, mixed, and mastered this collection of songs in four days at Sutton Sound in Atascadero. I love working with Rick there and I love working with Heiko and Matthias.
The second is my first live recording. Paul Sprawl Live was recorded on a Monday night in Prattville, Alabama. (near Montgomery) I reconnected this year with Bronson Tew, whom I'd met 8 or 9 years ago at an open mic in Asheville, NC. He set up a studio in Prattville, promoted a show for me, and recorded it. I took the tracks to Rick at Sutton Sound and we mixed and mastered the 13 that make this collection. There are some songs excluded, but the sequence that remains is in the order that they were performed.
